How to Truly Elevate Yourself as an Entrepreneur and Get Big Things Done

According to Tara Talbot, former VP of Human Resources at Workopolis, “the reason that most people get hired is the same as the reason most people get fired.” And that reason is personality. I want to add to that and say the same reason most people choose to work for you is the same reason they leave you. You’ve heard it before, “People don’t leave jobs, they leave their managers.” In their survey of 3,000 American workers, GoodHire found that 82% of them said they would potentially quit their job because of a bad manager. I honestly believe most of the time this is not because you’re a bad person. It just means things have changed and needs have changed and we haven’t evolved enough to meet those changing needs.

In some cases, it’s not even about changing, it’s about letting go. Just because somebody decides to leave you or fire you, it doesn’t mean it was your fault. Sometimes people see what they want to see and that’s their choice. Other people’s choices are outside of your control no matter how hard you try. That’s why you should only control things that are within your control like my coach always says, “Stay in your lane, Tawanda.” I just added the Tawanda for emphasis. Yeah, I am writing to me too.

So, if you’re an entrepreneur and are beating yourself up over something you lost - a deal, customer, team member, supplier, or even a spouse, I want to let you off the hook. This probably wasn’t entirely preventable. Life happens. I have learnt to accept whatever life throws at me even if I am not feeling good about it. If it has happened, there is a good chance that it was meant to happen. Epictetus the Greek Stoic philosopher once said, “It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”

Your response is your freedom or bondage and you get to choose. I have discovered the best strategy is to accept and embrace the situation and the emotions, thoughts, and feelings associated with that situation. As Carl Jung once said, “What we resist, persists.” And another smart person said, “What we embrace, dissolves.” I have learned not to resist anything except what genuinely needs to be resisted like the devil as scripture says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” If you’re feeling angry about something you lost, today is an opportunity to dissolve that baggage you have been carrying around with you. Let go and let God handle it.

Now, let’s talk about what you can control and how you move forward. You can still become who you want to be. I know the global marketplace has changed over the last couple of years and has become highly competitive. There are many entrepreneurs like you going through what you are going through. Businesses, organizations, and companies all over the world have had to change strategies. New ways of doing things are coming on the market nearly every day.

As scary as this time might be for you, you can still get big things done. The key to doing this is to build a high-performance team around you. Stop focusing on what’s wrong, focus on the big ideas you have for your life and start thinking about who can be on your team to help you get this done. You could be an entrepreneur running a big corporation, small business, social enterprise, or startup, or you are a seasoned entrepreneur and looking for the next big thing, the process is the same. What do you want? Where are you going? Who can help you get there? You need a team. I hope your goals are too big for just you.
