How to Build a High-Performance Team as an Entrepreneur
It starts with the intention to be disruptive, creative and strategic. It starts with the belief in the idea that you were born for a purpose and you have a mission you deserve to accomplish. Your belief becomes your message. Your belief needs to be clear. It needs to express what you feel deep inside. It needs to be powerful. Your belief needs to convey an experience to your team.
There has to be an inherent trustworthiness in who you are and what you stand for. This is telling people what you believe not what you think they want to hear. It's standing up for something. Your talents and intelligence alone are not enough to help you build a high-performance team and grow your business. You need an authentic voice. That’s what your team really cares about.
I truly believe every entrepreneur in the world has an authentic brand voice. However, most of us spend about 90 percent of our time lost in anxiety. We are not true to who we are. We are stuck. We are consumed with what other people think of us. We maintain a façade in order to impress people. We would rather live in mediocrity than dig deeper to find our voice. If you want to build a high-performance team around you and be truly influential you’ve to be willing to find your true voice and what’s unique about you. That’s how you get results. That’s how you get rewarded for your efforts. That’s how you grow.
High-performance is more than just activity or reach. It’s more than obsessing about what your competition is doing. It’s a mindset. It’s about influence. It’s about impact. It’s about knowing who you are. It’s about caring. It’s about speaking up. It’s about consistency. It’s about confidence. It’s about authenticity.
I believe authenticity is essential to building a high-performance team and achieving bigger goals for your business. I know you are special. I know you are talented. I know you believe. But if you truly want to inspire people to take action, find your authentic voice. It’s the key to generating maximum impact even with limited resources. Your voice can take you further than your talent.
Your voice matters because that’s how you build a team than can help you go further in life. Your customers, prospects, employees, network, or suppliers are part of your team. These people have the power to choose between you and someone else. You are a leader to these people. You may not realize this, but you are leading them with your passion, energy, business, skills or products.
You are selling your leadership to them constantly. Whether it’s good leadership or bad leadership they are receiving the invitation from you. You are also doing this in the face of massive competition. If you’re serious about building a high-performance team and creating your best life, you’ve to begin to be intentional about what you are offering.
Stop worrying about how to get ahead. Find your voice. Build the best team first. And results will come to you. Ask yourself:
Why should my team care?
I am just giving you some tough love here. The people that answer this question honestly will succeed. There has to be an alignment between your voice and what your team receives from you. The tighter this alignment becomes, the deeper the connection with your team. You need to make it easier for people to rally behind you. You need to make it easier for people to respond to what you are offering. You need to get them to believe. Your value proposition needs to be clear.
I know this is contrary to what you want to hear. I am going to say it anyway. Building a high-performance team is not about being smarter or more qualified than anyone else around you. It helps if you are smart and qualified, but it also doesn’t matter that much. It’s about finding you. It’s about being patient with you. It’s about taking your time. It’s about doing what’s necessary.
It’s about uncovering the deep stuff inside you. It’s about sharing that deep stuff. It’s about using that deep stuff to inspire others. Yeah, it sounds like a seduction process because it is. That’s how you thrive. That’s how people hear you. It’s tough, I know. It’s a learning and growth process. High-performance is more than just creating PowerPoint presentations. It’s more than just running marketing campaigns.
I challenge you to stop branding yourself too much. I challenge you to not obsess with marketing yourself. I challenge you to think beyond advertising. I am not saying these things are not important. I am saying they are not the things that really build high-performance teams.
I challenge you to identify what you stand for. I challenge you to develop a clear vision for your business and team. I challenge you to learn to express yourself effectively. I challenge you to draw a line in the sand like Jesus and speak up as he did for the woman caught in the act of adultery, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Yeah, you’ve to dig a little deeper to get that kind of faith and courage.
I will help you get that courage. Look around. The marketplace has become highly saturated. The competition is fierce. There are other people selling what you’re selling. Your services alone are no longer enough. The features and benefits of your products are just the starting point. You’ve to be serious about who you are. You’ve to get personal, but not take it personal. Your team needs more now. They need to find meaning in what you do. They want to feel unique and valued.
Change the rules. Don’t wait passively. Make a choice to deliver value to others. Empower. Be relevant in your interactions. Go high. Get personal. Meet the needs of your team. Show your team you value them. Make them feel preferred. Move beyond just what you want. Go beyond just trying to make the sale. Be genuine. Be thoughtful. Have a conversation. Find people that you can actually add value to and give it to them.
Make this the year you stop running from you. Discover what you are about. Know what you stand for. Start today. Show the world how unique you are. Be who you really are. Care about something. Find what is important to you. Be the leader you were meant to be. Maximize your authentic voice. Lead.
