The Most Important Quality You Need as an Entrepreneur
I believe when it comes to growing your business as an entrepreneur you need to do it in a way that makes people feel safe and secure around you. This is about being an effective leader and exuding great energy and making others feel good around you. In this blog post, I want to share with you the most important quality you need to become this kind of leader when building your business.
It starts with honesty. I believe honesty is how you build attraction with other people. It may not happen right way, but with time people respond to honesty. The world needs honesty more than ever.
Honesty starts with having an abundance mindset. When you’re secure in your own skin, you’re not afraid to be honest with anyone. Be honest about who you’re, what you want and where you’re going. Honesty is about the quality of connections not the quantity. I love this quote by Thomas Jefferson.
"Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom."
It took me a while to figure this stuff out. I have learnt to give freely to the world. I don’t ask anything in return unless I have to. But even then, I am not attached to any outcome. I make invitations, let go and move on. I say goodbye, kindly. In doing all this, I make sure you know who I am and what I stand for. I tell and speak the truth even if it hurts me or you a little.
There is a quote in Khaled Hosseini’s book The Kite Runner that I like a lot and it says, "When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth." Think about that for a moment.
It all starts with your mindset.
You have to be feeling secure to be honest. You have to be feeling strong. You have to be feeling connected to something bigger than you. You have to be feeling powerful to do this. Not the control kind of power, but the letting go kind of power. In her book, “Confidence: Finding It and Living It”, Dr. Barbara DeAngelis calls this Spiritual Confidence. This is the ability to speak, think, live, and love in a way that honours you and your values.
It starts by accepting who you truly are and loving yourself unconditionally. You have to set yourself free. You have to be feeling alive inside to do this well. You have to be feeling excited about your life. That’s how you grow your business properly and create the best team around you.
James E Faust says it even more beautifully. “Honesty is more than not lying. It is truth telling, truth speaking, truth living, and truth loving.” I have no idea who James E Faust is, but I love that quote. That’s how I approach entrepreneurship. Live your truth because it sets you free. I live my truth every day and I feel free no matter what is happening around me. I love this passage of Scripture when Jesus says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Living, telling, speaking, and loving the truth also sets others free. It creates feelings of safety, peace, and relaxation that make people want to be around you.
People respond when they are not feeling over burdened by your demands and expectations. You don’t want people to feel pressured to give you things. I know you are looking to grow your business, get customers, or get hired, but I want these things to come easy to you.
You have to have the right mindset first. That’s the only thing that matters.
What does it mean to have the right mindset?
It means think the thoughts that create the things that you want to experience.
Think enjoyment. Think good things. Think open. Think free. Think connected. Think secure. Think whole. Think peace.
Where do you start?
Mahatma Gandhi already said it, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” I know this is a cliché and I believe it is because of its simplicity that we miss it. But there is a difference between knowing this and practicing it.
If you want hope, give others hope. If you want freedom, set others free first. And if you want purpose, help others find theirs. If you want more, be more. That’s what growing your business is all about.
If you want enjoyment, enjoy yourself first. If you want interaction, interact with yourself first. If you want more positive experiences, experience yourself first. If you want to be desired, desire yourself first. Give yourself these things first before you can receive or give them to anyone.
Be these things first. Be that person first. Become comfortable in your own skin first. Challenge your insecurities. Move towards your fears. Open up. Share yourself. Don’t close yourself. Don’t hide. Become attractive to yourself first.
I’ll be honest. It takes practice to do this. But I believe in you and I want the best for you. And I have discovered that to truly be the best, you need to be the best leader you can be. That means leading you first before you lead anyone. This is more than just dreaming big. This is more than just being smart or intelligent. It’s about being self-aware, thinking long-term and empowering others.
Authentic entrepreneurship is about growing your leadership not just getting customers or getting hired. Those are just outcomes, but the goal when building your business should always be leadership. You can start today. Do it for yourself first. Be kind to others. Be effortless with your actions. Be naturally attractive. Be what you desire. Be the calm, confident and secure being you know is already inside you.
